DISCOVERING NEW ADVENTURES THROUGH
Today we started class by using each of the vocabulary words in a sentence. This is in preparation for the vocabulary quiz tomorrow. Students then completed a reading response assignment with 9 choices for writing prompts and the choice of either writing about the class novel or the informational text we read yesterday about the September 11th terrorist attacks. Reading responses that were not completed in class are due at the beginning of class tomorrow. If the students finished the reading response during class, they were allowed to work on a vocabulary extension coloring activity or read quietly. This activity is not required for homework, but is good practice for the quiz tomorrow.
If you need a copy of the words for tomorrow, they can be found under the Assignments tab on this website. Happy Friday Eve! Mrs. McCartney Today we used context clues to determine the meaning of vocabulary words from The Watsons Go To Birmingham. These words need to be studied for the vocab quiz on Friday. The words and meanings are posted on the Assignments page in case they are misplaced. We also took notes on plot based on a BrainPOP video. This included the following: plot, conflict, protagonist, antagonist, exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, plot device, and non-linear plot. What to expect this week:This week we will be resuming the normal schedule for assignments: Monday - vocabulary and literary devices Tuesday - vocabulary and novel reading Wednesday - article analysis (this week, we are using an article about the 9/11 attacks to honor the date), novel if time Thursday - reading response, vocabulary review activity Friday - Vocabulary quiz, novel reading Make up quizzes and missing workI will always accept late work. There is a 5% penalty for each day late up to 25%, but PLEASE turn in your work! You worked really hard and I want to give you credit!
I will be doing make-up quizzes after the Vocabulary quiz on Friday. If you need to review the other vocabulary lists, they are posted on the assignment page. Progress ReportsProgress Reports were sent home for my class this week. They were asked to have a parent sign them and return for a participation grade. I did not collect them so each student would have a record of missing assignments. I will accept missing assignments until the end of the grading period and will update grades in Skyward as soon as I am able. Many students have completed assignments in class that will replace grades I will update this weekend. What's Due MondayWe have been working on the Civil Rights Movement Poster for 2 weeks in class as time has permitted. I have extended the deadline to Monday. However, many students did not complete the assignment. I am posting the assignment directions on the Assignment page.
Today in class, we completed our second reading response. As per my policy, if it was not completed in class, it needs to be completed for homework due Monday. Due to confusion last time, the first one was not graded. This one is worth 10 points. The instructions and writing prompt choices are on one side and the rubric is on the page that the response is written on. I found many pages under desks and thrown on the floor after classes were over. I will be posting this on the Assignment page as well. New PlatformI have heard many concerns about having problems logging onto the Google Classroom websites and have come to the conclusion that it just isn't going to work for this year. This is the new platform that I will be using to communicate any announcements as well as what is going on in class. Info about this weekWe only have 3 days in school this week due to the holiday and the very sunny storm day, so I have changed a few of the routine assignments. We will not have a vocabulary quiz this week due to the short amount of time. Instead, I am extending the opportunity for any student to retake a quiz they missed or did poorly on for any reason on Thursday and Friday at 8:45. Students will need to sign up the day before in order to receive a pass to come to my classroom before school. We will continue reading The Watsons Go To Birmingham: 1963 this week. We read through chapter one this past week and are looking forward to chapter two this week. We are working on a mini-project poster about the setting of the novel: the civil rights movement. Students are required to have three important events/people/places from the civil rights movement illustrated on their poster with descriptions for full credit. I am providing material students may use to complete the assignment in class. We will be doing another science current event article analysis on Thursday. I am allowing students to choose their own article from the Science News for Students website using a laptop this week. I have noticed that many students do not complete the assignment in class and need additional time. This is fine, but if internet access is unavailable after school, I would highly encourage students to select one of the printed articles available in class. Reading responses will be done in class on Friday and will be written about the class novel. Students will choose 2 questions from the menu and write a paragraph to answer each. We will be reading the novel every day in class, so it is imperative that students attend regularly. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. Just this week, I will give students an extra credit point toward an assignment of their choice for an email from their parent. Grades are PostedI have officially posted all of the grades so far! All grades are accessible through Skyward. I have marked missing assignments - there are quite a lot of them. I cannot give grades without work (or names)! I will accept assignments as long as the grading period is open.
